2 year old Dogo Argentino avoiding or afraid of me

We've recently (1 month) got a 2 year old Argentino from a previous owner who was no longer able to keep her. My son brought her home and she is totally devoted to him! We can all see how happy she is when he is with her; she is well behaved and listens and obeys most times, but anytime I try to approach her, she will back away. It seems that she is afraid of me; I have tried to walk around her without making eye contact and generally avoiding her, hoping she will begin to trust me knowing that I don't mean to hurt her.
The previous owner says that she behaved in the same manner with his father.
What can I do to gain her trust?
