My 6 yr old Cocker Spaniel started eating dog poop about 1 yr ago, she mostly eats my other dogs poop or other dogs who happen to go in my yard. (My dogs are trained to an electronic fencing so dont go outside the yard unless they are with me) She will eat poop that is dried or frozen (we live in Minnesota) so she does it year around, rarely will she go for the "fresh" stuff!!!! I have tried spraying both hers and our other dogs poop with various dog safe repellants...bitter apple and the like, even tried 50% diluted vinegar/water, she will stay away from those piles but if theres a speck without it she is right on it. So therefore I either have to clean up after each time they do their business or spray every pile!!! I have also tried a electronic shocking collar and she responds to that by backing off, but if I dont use the "bad tone" or shock her she goes right back to it......I have praised her when she backs off, used the "leave it" training and praised her. I have talked to my Vet and he has agreeded I have done all the right things. I did read the article published on this site, and noticed one idea about adding various foods to there dog food which makes the poop taste bad to the dog, problem is my other dog has diet restrictions and I am not sure if I can give those items to her, she has a problem where she develops bladder stones and is on prescription dog food, so am not sure if I can give her things like pineapple, pumpkin, spinach, pickles or garlic....and its my understanding that garlic is not good for dogs as it can cause vomiting and red blood cell damage. Any ideas or methods that have worked for others would be greatly appreciated.
