Cutting claws

I have always had my dogs claws cut at the vet, but most groomers do claws as well, is it safe to let the groomer cut claws or should I stick with the vet?

I have always had it done at the vet, but I assume that if someone is running a business grooming dogs they would be competent to cut claws, but if you are not sure stick with what you trust.

I used to work at a grooming parlour and learnt to do it myself, the black nails are the most tricky because you cannot see the quick. The groomers that I worked in would sometimes, albeit unintentionally, cut the nails too low and then have to use a styptic powder to stem the bleeding.

When it comes to my own dogs, I only cut the white/clear nails where I can see the quick. Where the nails are black, I use a metal nail file and file them down manually. The advantage with the vets is that you can see the procedure being done, as opposed to the groomers where you have no idea how it was carried out...........

I was in Canada recently and some people I met had a cat who had it's front claws removed and others had a dog that had had it's dewclaws removed.
