Hi my name is oshirl and I have blk lab named JAKAH he is almost 9 mon and a great deal of handful. I put leash on to try to work with him he jumps at leash bites it chews it. I have been trying lures,ignoring and etc. I have been trying to work with him to walk with me he pulls and etc, I have bought harness, leashes and also a training leash 20ft and just cant seem to get him to do what I want. He jumps at guest and anyone he sees. Any suggestions
Hi Oshirl, I guess he must be very strong now. Someone with more experience will com along with some advice about where to start with his training. Have you attended any classes with him? That may be a good starting point.
I agree that some obedience classes would be a good idea - the instructor could give you some help with handling him. Also, I am a fan of the prong collar. I know it makes some people cringe because it looks brutal, but if used properly, it is an excellent tool that is effective with many dogs. An obedience class I once took introduced us to these collars, and they offer control that a flat collar doesn't. I have even gotten special permission to use it walking our shelter dogs that are terrible "pullers". With a few "pops" of the prong collar, they have a completely different attitude and it's amazing how well it works with some dogs. If you use one, be sure and use it correctly as it is intended, though. Good luck!
I would never suggest to anyone to use a prong coller. If you have to put a animal in pain to get the behavior you want from him, you really need to learn how to train with positive reinforcement. I have used prong collars and choke chains in my training career before but once I really learned positive reinforcement I haven't used one since.
My feeling about the OP is that they aren't dog savvy enough to handle this problem without a real trainer. I don't think instruction from the internet is going to work for them.
ETA: the only proper way to use a prong collar is to throw it in the trash.

Bill knows what he is talking about, finding a good trainer and working on the behaviour issues would make a big difference to your enjoyment of your dog. It would be best to get on with it as soon as possible before the bad habits become more of a problem.

Thank You for all suggestion. And yes I will work on finding a professional trianer. Back along he chewed in my wall where his bed is a 6 by 8 whole into the sheetrock. I had an ad in paper and etc was getting rid of him. Nobody wanted him. So we decided to keep him so now my husband put 3/8"plywood around the walls but one and guess what he got to that one that didnt have this morning. But Thank You so much for the responses.
Does he have a crate? It may be an idea to have him in a crate at night to stop him damaging your home, also make sure he has plenty of toys to chew on, he is still a young dog and they like to chew. I hope it goes well with the trainer.Originally Posted by oshirl
Yes we tried the crate but he was so hard getting him my husband had too fight with him to get him he would even growl. AND he has 10 toys where he sleeps I have a gate across my laundry room. What would make tear into ur walls though? I know he is a still a puppy and likes to chew but why walls. I have not had a mice at first I said maybe he hears something in the wall but I have a fairly new trlr.
I have no personal experience of a prong collar, I have never even seen one and I intend to keep it that way. I do have experience of dealing with dogs that pull and I know from my own experience that with hard work and patients it is possible to resolve that problem without inflicting pain.
