\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->Hi Everyone -
\r\nI\'m just evaluating what training method to use to housebreak a new puppy (I don\'t have one yet - still in the education stage!), and the general consensus seems to be crate training is the way to go. I can\'t help by feel its kind of cruel/mean to keep a young animal "locked in a cage" - anyone have thoughts on this?
\r\nThanks!<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '-><!-' + '- AMS FIRST IN POST -' + '->\r\n

\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->I used to think that myself, but no more. My dogs look at their crates as their safe spots and safe havens. If they get scared, that\'s where they go (except for when they run to me, of course). It\'s their place, and they know it. Now I don\'t keep them \'locked up\' in them. If they get scolded, sometimes they are told to go in their crates, which are unlocked. They know how to open the door and they do, and they do it a lot on their own. They love to lay down and stretch out in the crate. I\'m just sold on it. Sometimes I need them to go in there when the doorbell rings. They just run in there. I tend to lock the door, but they know I\'m coming right back. Now I do have an open crate. By that I mean, there are no walls that some crates have. This means my dogs have a complete view of everything. I would never get one with walls. That is cruel to me. My dogs can see everything and follow me around unless I leave the room. They love that.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '-><!-' + '- AMS SECOND IN POST -' + '->\r\n

\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->My brother used a large cage with his dog (a flat coat retriever) when it was young. It took months for it to learn not to chew and not to eat everything (non food items) so it was safer for her to be in her cage if she had to be left for a couple of hours. She saw it as a safe place to be.

\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->I\'ve never crate trained a dog, but my mother-in-law just finished training her puppy. There is no way she could have managed training that puppy without that crate! Of course, she used it to help get her older dog used to the puppy & keep the puppy safe from the older dog. The older dog is old, has arthritis & is pretty set in his ways so there were days that the puppy decided it was better to lay in the crate.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '->\r\n

\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->I actually bought a nice size crate for my oldest dog. I got her when she was 1 yr old. Not long after I got my 2nd dog as a weeks-old puppy. The gal I got her from gave me a crate she had been using. So for a while, I had two. Well, as they bonded, both dogs began to share the one I\'d bought. It\'s big enough for both of them. They love their togetherness. So, one day I folded up the puppy\'s crate and except for one moment of \'hmm, Mom took my crate\', she\'s never looked back. In fact, they really don\'t like being separated too much.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '->\r\n

\r\nI pick up my new puppy in a few days, shelter pup with zero training so I think crate training will be the way to go. Training tips online advise a gentle coxing with treats to introduce the crate slowly, does that mean I should not transport puppy home from pickup in the new crate? (3 hour drive) I was intending to put a chew toy in the crate with the pup for the trip home, will this scare it off the crate?<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '-><!-' + '- AMS TENTH IN POST -' + '->\r\n

\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->Crates are a great tool, even for some older dogs. My Sabie, loves her kennel and in fact if you close the door when she\'s not inside it you get this look like "Mom, why?" Crating is good for throughout the day when you aren\'t home and can\'t watch your dogs (management) Chewing is a self-rewarding behaviour, It\'s great for if there are just too many people and the dog is overwhelmed (a safe place for them to go), It\'s great for puppies when you are busy for a little while and just can\'t keep an eye on them (can save you from accidents and chewing). I think it goes without saying that you should take your puppy out to go pee before placing him/her in the kennel. It\'s a place for them to sleep at night (I keep Sabie\'s door open and she goes in there all on her own throughout the whole night until I wake up) If you don\'t normally use the crate it can be a great tool for a time out. Or if you do I might use two different crates. One for a safe place and the other for a time-out. I use Sabie\'s for both however, she loves her kennel and so getting a time-out in it is no big deal. If your dog doesn\'t like crates already I may be reluctant to use one for a time out. Maybe the bathroom? I believe that you can use a crate to bring the dog home. Just take some time before you put the crate in the car to get your pup used to it. Throw some treats or a toy in there and let your pup retrieve them. Do it again and again if necessary until he/she has no problem going in the crate. Then I would get him/her to go in the crate and I would wait for them to settle down and sit or lie down before closing the door. Let them accept it first. Then I would have them in the car and go home. A good idea is to take them for a walk before attempting the crate. Also, you should take them for a walk around the neighbourhood once you get home as well. Get a little bit of that extra energy/anxiety out

Hi Everyone -
\r\nI\'m just evaluating what training method to use to housebreak a new puppy (I don\'t have one yet - still in the education stage!), and the general consensus seems to be crate training is the way to go. I can\'t help by feel its kind of cruel/mean to keep a young animal "locked in a cage" - anyone have thoughts on this?
\r\nThanks!

Hi a crate is a very good thing to have and to use for your dog 3 of my dogs sleep in them at night i sleeps on my bed and my puppy is in a puppy pen in my front room. It is not cruel at all.xx<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '->\r\n

Hi most crates or Cages are all clear all the way round they are very good for your dogs if you have more then one dog. They are very good for the car to put them in better then leaving them free in the car . I would never leave them in one all day or all night they should be free if you are in. I think sometimes if you go out if you have a kitchen with a door then leave your dog in there. My dogs go in there cages at night with the door shut i could not have them free in my bedroom only one of mind is he is the oldest one and the first American Cocker i had.They are only in them when i am asleep.xx<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '->\r\n

\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->no it is the first thing that should be done with a new pup.It is simple to train for the crate,when you feed the pup feed in the crate and do not at first close the door when you do start to secure the door do it in short time periods. Have owned many dogs,also many breeds many were working breeds that We traveled with,all dogs and bitches were crated in the van(or pu truck) it is a safe place for the dog and for your safety.If by chance you have a accident that dogs is now a projectile bounceing in the vechicle.If you plan on purchasing a pup(dog) you now have an obligation for the up keep and training of that dog.Living with a well trained dog is a joy and fun for both owner and dog,basic ob is a great start.If you purchase a dog have fun,for you and the dog.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '->\r\n

It depends on how long it takes for you to teach him what is appropriate and what is not appropriate for him to chew. He has no concept of this and must be taught.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '-><!-' + '- AMS TENTH IN POST -' + '->\r\n

Rocky is a boxer & nearly full-grown. We measured him today & he stands 21" at the shoulder already so he won\'t get much taller. I started just by treat training. I showed her the crate, gave her a treat inside, and told her to stay. We moved on from there. Eventually I would walk out of the room and make sure she stayed and then I started commanding her to go to the crate from another room, etc. It takes some time for all of that, but she knew her crate almost instantly.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '->\r\n

\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->How about with a new puppy, one that you have no idea how big he\'ll get? Just buy one that looks right or what? Because Jasper right now is only 8 weeks & I don\'t know how big he\'s gonna be as an adult dog. I don\'t even know if I want to have a crate so they can go in it whenever they or I want them to or if it\'ll just mainly be for transporting them to the vet. Gah, I really need to figure this all out before we buy crates.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '->\r\n

\r\n <!-' + '- google_ad_section_start -' + '->My dog is one and a half times her height to get her length roughly. So, if a chihuahua is 12-15 inches tall, a blue heeler is 17-20 inches and a lab is 21 to 24 inches. You should maybe look at how big your dog is now and judge which breed Jasper is most likely to take after. Then you would look at the crates at your local pet store and decide. My personal guess for the size of crate would be a medium to a large. My dogs are husky crosses and I have an XL wire crate. They can both fit in it for a little while, but now a whole day. Sabie definitely doesn\'t need a crate that big but it works for us. Sometimes if the crate is too big they can pee or poop in one corner and lie in the other which doesn\'t help for housebreaking. If you are scared to take the dive and buy a crate because it might be the wrong size and is expensive, I know our local SPCA sells used crates.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '->\r\n

\nI am looking at crates at PetSmart but I can\'t decide between the large or extra large of this one. The large says up to 70lbs and boxers are right at 70lbs when fully grown so I am thinking the extra large, just to be on the safe side. There must be something that drawn Lucky\'s attention to tearing up the door. It is better if you could see what is wrong. Stressful dogs (those who are rarely to walk outside the house) are common to show some attitude like this even for a grown up ones. So, you better review if the problem is coming from yourself. By the way, large crate is enough for a 70lbs dog. I also got my rottie with a large crate too and they are just fine.<!-' + '- google_ad_section_end -' + '-><!-' + '- AMS TENTH IN POST -' + '->\r\n

Is crate training cruel?
Hi Everyone -
I'm just evaluating what training method to use to housebreak a new puppy (I don't have one yet - still in the education stage!), and the general consensus seems to be crate training is the way to go. I can't help by feel its kind of cruel/mean to keep a young animal "locked in a cage" - anyone have thoughts on this?
Thanks!
