A good dog crate is one of the best investments you can make for your new puppy or older dog.

Choosing A Suitable Dog Crate

All dog crates are not the built the same. The many varied styles of dog crates are all suited to different applications. It will depend on your individual circumstances as to which crate is the ideal fit for you and your dog.

Some of your options are collapsible or folding crates, double door crates or the hard plastic vari-kennel style which are ideal for traveling. My personal favorites are the MidWest and PetSafe model of crate - I've never had any problems with these two leading brands.

The size of the crate is a crucial consideration. When you are crate training young puppies it's important that the crate is not too large. Either purchase a crate with dividers or you may have to buy one for now and one for when your puppy if fully grown.
Never use your crate as a tool for punishment - that's not the proper function of a dog crate.
Your dog's collar should be removed each time he/she is placed in the crate. A collar can get caught up on the inside of the crate which is obviously very dangerous for your dog.
Your dog shouldn't be crated for extended periods each and every day. A crate is a great tool for many situations that arise but it is not a baby-sitter for your dog.

Wire Crates

Wire dog crates are great for ventilation, portability (most fold down) and they are very easy to clean. Another important feature is that most come with divider panels which is crucial when crate training puppies. Stick with the good wire crate brands such as MidWest, Precision and General Cage.
