Dog Food Nutrition - Weighing Up Your Dog Food Options

Today we're going to discuss one of the "hottest" and most controversial subjects in the dog world - dog food.

Choosing the correct way to feed your dog is probably the most important decision you will ever make for your dog.

The nutrition you provide directly influences every aspect of your dog's life, it's importance cannot be overstated. Things like how your puppy grows and develops, his/her general health, overall wellbeing, longevity and even behavior are all impacted by what you put in your dog's food bowl each day.

What Exactly Should You Feed To Your Dog?

There's so much information and many conflicting views surrounding dog food that it can be hard to know what to believe or who to listen to when making the feeding choice for your own dog.

A good starting point is to watch the video below. This video is sure to disturb you and may even make you angry, but it will also provide the answers you need to make an informed feeding decision.

Watch the video right through to the end (it's 8min long). If you'd like to find out more about Andrew's research and book you can read about it on his website - Dog Food Secrets by Andrew Lewis.

Feeding Your Dog - What Are Your Options?

When deciding the most suitable and nutritious way to feed your dog it makes it easier to break down your options into the following three general groups:

  1. Commercial Dog Food

  2. Homemade Dog Food

  3. Raw Dog Food

You can select one of the above feeding methods, or do what I do and feed a combination of all three.

If you're struggling to sort out the best feeding option for you and your dog I'd strongly suggest getting hold of Andrew's book "Dog Food Secrets".

Unfortunately this is not a free ebook like the one's you have received from me in the past few days - I couldn't convince Andrew to give it away to all of my newsletter subscribers!

Andrew has spent a lot of time and money researching all the best options for your dog's nutrition needs. His conclusions are all in the book and he makes it very clear about what he considers to be the best way to feed our dogs.

Some of the topics uncovered in Andrew's research and detailed in the book are:

  • Which Commercial Dog Foods are best and safe to feed (there's 9 of them).

  • How to change from one dog food to another - the right way.

  • Body weight calorie chart which eliminates the guesswork when deciding the meal portion size required by your dog.

  • Foods you must avoid giving to your dog at all times.

  • The correct level of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and water you must provide to your dog for optimal health.

  • Hundreds of nutritionally balanced (and tasty!) recipes you can use straight away.

If you're already feeding a homemade dog food diet (or would like to give it a go) you may want to try a few of the recipes I have on my site - some dog food recipes to get started with.

Choosing the right dog food

For loads more recipes and dog food nutrition advice it's best to visit Andrew's site, he's a whole lot more qualified to discuss this topic than I am. My specialty is dog training and behavior, which we'll get back to in the next edition of my newsletter.

Keep an eye out for my next newsletter where I reveal my very favorite dog training method. There's loads of more cool (and free!) stuff to come.
