A family member has a young shih tzu (now a year old). She got her when she was about 12 weeks old, she gets on well with the other dogs, she is affectionate, friendly, brave and very naughty. She is not left alone very often but at night and in the short periods when her owners are out she is left in her cage. The problem is that she chews the carpet, she is very quick and in just a couple of minutes she can do quite a lot of damage. She is not bored, she has lots of exercise and she loves games and play, she just has the devil in her. Any ideas on how to deal this please?
You might try spraying with some of that 'stay away' stuff. It's about 50/50 in reliability, but it could work.
Hi, I read that dogs hate the smell and taste of vinegar.I water it down, but when desperate have used it neat, and it works. Use an apple one or something if you particularly like the strong smell. sound awful but cider vinegar smells quite nice, especially with the over riding smell of dettol that we have in our house at mo. (HOUSE TRAINING...dont ask!}
If the dog has started to chew an area of carpet, cover it or remove it because if you leave it the dog will keep seeing it and be encouraged to chew again. The vinegar sounds as if it would be worth a try.
You could also use something lemon scented... I found out today that our dogs absolutely hate the smell of lemon dishwasher powder. I used it on the carpet today & they have been avoiding that room ever since. Which is good because I don't want them in there anyway.
Thanks for the advice, I will tell them to try using vinegar on that area of carpet.
Please let us know how you get on with the vinegar, I hope it works.
Yeah, I'd be curious as well how the vinegar solution works out. I don't even remember which dog chewed on the carpet by the back patio, but the evidence remains today still.
Hi, well I found that the vinegar solution certainly put Buddy of, even thought the carpet was chewed he went over to it,sniffed,sneezed and has not been back to it.
