How did you aquire your dog(s)?

Once again, I am courious.... How did you come about your dog(s)?

I moved into a rental house, and the people next door breed Rat Terriers. I didn't like that they had them ALL running around together, which lead to alot of (male) dog fights. She had tried placing the one male a few times, but he became a flight risk and bitter.

One day when I came home from work he was in my yard, I took him back to them, with no worries.
But he just came back, everyday. So we would have dinner, a sleep over and breakfast, then I would place him back over the fence.
This went on for weeks.

Finally I received a certified letter in the mail, (I had to sign for it). Inside was his tags, health records, and a signed registeration. A note saying, "Please don't put him back over the fence, that little dog loves you."

I've had him 6 years now, never a flight risk, I leave the gate open all the time, he never goes out of it. He's never offered to bit ANYONE. A great, wonderful little man. I am blessed to have him.

Awww, that's a great story Syn. We got Ruby & Jakey out of rescue. Roddy came to us as a foster dog but the poor boy had so many 'issues' to sort out that it was a good 5-6 months before he was anywhere near suitable for rehoming by which time we had fallen hopelessly inlove with him and couldn't let him go!

I got both my dogs through rescue. Abby was abandoned in the woods when she was about 9 months. I got her at 1 year. She's now 11. Thor was born in rescue and I got him at 12 weeks. He's now 6 1/2. One of my two cats was a pound cat and the other I got from my son who somehow got too many cats. :)

I love the face of Boxers they're just so honest. He's a handsome boy. Is this your "let me swollow it whole, I'll taste it later" boy?

I also have cats, several feral, but three that come and go as they please.

My mom still brings up the time I told her, I was never going to have kids, I would adopt. So many no one wants. My best friend lived in an orphanage. She says she is proud that I kept to my word, even though her grandkids are all four legged.:)

This is my first post(NEWBIE) here. It warms my heart to see all of you getting your pets through RESCUE!!! That's what I do!!! I am a foster parent through my rescue shelter. As you can tell (by my name) I LOVE GOLDENS!!! My rescue takes in ALL BREEDS(I've only had 1 golden...BOO).But....I have 2 of my own(both are RESCUES).WE are a No-Kill shelter.NOT ALL SHELTERS ARE!!! Both of our dogs are rescues as well. We got our Rottie/Chow from a shelter in Kentucky and our Beagle/Whippet? because the girl I share an office with was fostering her. Of course, I just wanted to "take a look"... you know how that goes.... then we thought we'd just "try her out with Thor".... never looked back - Shelby is a great addtion to the family and my little obedience rock star!! Thor visits hospice patients with me and they both take obedience classes. When you see them do so well and have such a meaningful life, I find it even more rewarding when they are rescues (someone's "throw aways"). I love them both so much!Attachment 231

Thanks Syn. I love rescue dogs, especially ones with issues, I find it so rewarding to be able to make a difference to their lives and hopefully make it better for them.

My oldest, the beagle, Cobber I actually bought and paid for. Gasp. He's 15 now - (when did that happen? He's still my puppy-) The others are all rehomed/rescues.

I got my baby from my sister. She wasn't able to bring him with her because she had to move out of the country and I guess it was a blessing in disguise because we're now an inseparable pair! :o

I have always adopted dogs from the rescue centre. I have had some wonderful dogs and they have had a loving and happy home.

My husband and I agree to adopt a dog when our son asked for a pet dog. We thought it would be better to adopt than buy because a friend of mine educated me about adoption and rescues way back in college.

Mostly my pets have been adopted, but my very first dog when I was a little girl was brought from a reputable breeder and chosen because it was a small dog, a Jack Russell Terrier. I loved that dog so much, but it is not a breed I would choose for a young child as they are best when they work. That dog taught me so much, loyalty, determination, individuality, stubbornness, fearlessness and to never give up and never let go.

Well, I wanted to go to the SPCA for my current dogs, but I still had an older dog, and they had this rule that you have to bring your dogs in to meet the new dogs. That wasn't feasible for me, so I looked at the county shelter but never got the dogs I wanted. So, I had to turn to, yuck, Craig's List which is scary most of the time. However, I believe God has a plan. I refuse to 'buy' animals. I found one lady who wanted a bunch of money for a black lab, but in the end I told her that I just couldn't afford it. Look, I'll spend thousands when they're mine, but I just don't believe in spending 'x' hundred of dollars to acquire the dog. There's more to that, but that's another post.

Anyway, a bit of time past and then she emailed me and asked me if I still wanted her. The money didn't matter anymore. She told me a man had come out to look at her and wanted her, but she just had a bad vibe from him. With me, she felt I'd love her. She brought her to me, and I do love my black lab. I wanted another dog though and responded to another gal. She also felt the love. She'd found a puppy, but she was a college student and knew she couldn't really care for her full time. Believe me, this gal loved the puppy. She cried dropping her off. It was really hard on her, but she knew I'd love the pup and she liked how the two dogs were getting along right off the bat.

So, that's the story on these current 2. It's different for all of my past dogs.

It must be terrible to have to give a dog up for adoption, so I am sure the young girl was pleased to find you Orrymain, at least she knew her puppy would be loved.

Just goes to show you...there are no accidents! Everything happens for a reason and it seems the "right" dogs find us every time. Great Story!

I have tried a couple of times to bring in a new dog for Buster, but he just isn't ready yet. We lost both of our old dogs on the same day, it was really hard on us. Maybe I'm not ready yet either. Buster's not mean about it, he plays with them, but after awhile it's like he says "it's getting late, you have to go home now", and goes to his room and won't come back out.

I'm sure it's for a good reason, one day a little dog will come along in need....and we will be here.

I think there is some truth in the idea of the right dog coming along at the right time.

I certainly think that in some cases animals have an instinct for finding the right people to help them.

I have 4 Aussie's one of which is blind and scared of pretty much everything now,he is now the oldest he is from a breeder(yeah i know so sue me) who works with live stock,3 are orig from the same person(there's a twist,did i mention the 3 are bother's?) My brothers dog ranger is the first from a friends uncle i dont remember the reason why he was free but yeah,2nd was from some people who had sheep but they both worked all the time so had no time for him his name is buster reason they didnt want to him is cuz he kinda ran some of their sheep to death & tended to go down to the creek by their house(oops)he stopped this after we got him weird huh,lol. And last was Rambo,(the runner as i call him,he is to friendly and sociable for his own good evidently) also free i dont really remember why though, he has pretty much no attention span though unless you have food of any kind,totally not joking. i could write more about each but that might take 3 or 4 page's xD haha

My husband's cousin in a breeder so that's how we got most of our dogs. We find it convenient because she already preps and have them vaccinated before she gives them to us. And we are sure that they are from good lineage. At times, we would house some of her dogs before they are brought to their new owners. So basically, we've been around lots of dog breeds with different temperaments and attitude. And we have come to love them all.
