    Treats?

I am interested to know what others think about giving treats. My dog has always been difficult about eating (she is a rescue dog) so I keep to her normal feeding times and reward her with attenion rather than food.

I think that they are fine in moderation. I give my cat treats from time to time as I do not have a dog.

I don't tend to give treats, she has a good diet when we adopted her it took a long time to get her eating well so I don't want to mess it up.

I use treats and lots of them when training them, I would find it very hard to teach my dogs anything much without the use of treats.

My advice: use carrots. My vet turned me onto this. They go in and out of the dog's system, are good for their teeth, and there's no guilt in giving your dogs lots of carrots for treats.

Except they contain a lot of sugar.

They are better than regular treats, though, and my dogs love them now.

I have treats handy but i give it in moderation. I don't want to spoil my dog too much. Do you guys think 2-3x a week is just fine?

It greatly depends on why you are giving the treats. If you are using them during training, use the often. Be very generous. If you are using them during training give very very very small tiny treats. You don't want your dog to get full. Training treats shouldn't be much larger than the head of a pin. During a good 10 minute training session, I may give 100 treats or more. One hot dog will make well over 100 treats.

Treats you are giving just to be a good person and because your dog has been good should be given no more than 2 - 3 times a week.
